Biography

Building on her PhD research on the role of cities in a knowledge economy (ESRC, University of Birmingham), Rachel’s research focuses on urban economies and large metropolitan regions, and also the role of knowledge, creativity, and innovation in contemporary economies. Rachel’s contribution to relational economics centres on her technical development of new techniques such as ‘relational mapping’,‘spatial-relational mapping’, serious games, and mobile applications for research collection. Rachel’s more recent work on the performance of large cities during after the recession has opened up new avenues of debate about the different growth trajectories and performance of cities, and the importance of amenity investment, innovation spikes, and education and leisure sectors as new spatial fixes.
