In her collages and sculptures, Nicole Wermer’s abstracts the attractions and surfaces of a contemporary consumer culture to architectural structures that allow for echoes of seduction and control. The question of the importance of design of everyday objects, as in industrial design, runs through many of Wermer’s works. Functionality and the serial productivity of objects seem to disqualify it for fine art. Nicole Wermers negotiates precisely this aspect in presenting her considerations on the relationship between utility and aesthetics. She does not deny her fascination for the composition of the surfaces, color values and lines of her starting material, and by choosing certain materials and forms known from other contexts introduces references that provoke a link between form and content.
